THE Pre-Workout by MyProtein Review: Is it Effective?

Today we are going to take a look at The Pre-Workout from MyProtein. It used to be called MyPre V2, but I guess that wasn’t catchy enough. Anyway, this is a pre-workout supplement that has been getting a lot of attention lately, so we wanted to see what all the hype was about.

Who is MyProtein?

MyProtein is one of the biggest sports nutrition brands in the world. They are based in the UK, but they ship worldwide to over 70 countries. They have a massive range of products, including protein powder, pre-workouts, amino acids, and more.

They work with Informed-Sport so athletes can be confident that their world-class products don’t contain WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) banned substances.

They were also rated #1 for value and #2 for quality by Labdoor, a company that grades sports nutrition products so you know they are putting out some good quality.

 

What is The Pre-Workout?

The Pre-Workout from MyProtein is what they call their “turbocharged pre-workout formula” designed to give you an explosive boost for training when you need it most.

This supplement is vegetarian and vegan friendly and is also gluten-free. It comes in seven flavors, including blue raspberry, grape, green apple and more.

Personally, I don’t like the name all that much but that’s just me.

Here is where the rubber meets the road, the ingredients. Let’s see what’s in this bad boy.

The main ingredients are:

L-Citrulline 4000mg – This non-essential amino acid acts as a precursor to nitric oxide production. Translated, that means it can help increase blood flow and provides improved muscle pumps.

Caffeine Anhydrous 150mg – We all know what caffeine is. It’s a stimulant that can help improve energy and focus. This amount might seem high to you, but 150 mg is about average regarding pre-workout supplements.

Beta-Alanine 1600mg – Betaine anhydrous is a compound that is found in a variety of foods, including beets, spinach, and wheat germ. It is also available in supplement form. Betaine anhydrous is sometimes used as a bodybuilding supplement, as it is thought to help increase muscle strength and size.

Creatine Monohydrate 2000mg – Creatine monohydrate is a popular supplement among athletes and fitness enthusiasts and is the most studied supplement in the world. It’s also the most effective, in my opinion.

It is an amino acid that helps to supply energy to muscles. Creatine monohydrate has been shown to increase strength and muscle mass and decrease recovery time.

Personally, I have had great success with creatine in terms of strength gains and I have never had any side effects, though I am sure some people might. I wouldn’t mind seeing a little bit bigger of a dose on the creatine but 2000 mg is ok.

Beta-Alanine 2000mg – Beta-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is used by muscle cells to synthesize carnosine. Carnosine is a dipeptide (consisting of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine) that acts as a buffer against changes in pH levels. This is important because during high-intensity exercise, muscle cells produce large amounts of hydrogen ions (H+), which lower the pH level and can lead to muscle fatigue. Carnosine helps to keep the pH level stable, delaying the onset of muscle fatigue.

Beta-alanine supplements have been shown to increase carnosine levels in muscle cells, improving exercise performance. For example, one study showed that beta-alanine supplementation improved performance during a 4-minute cycling time trial by 2.8%.

Beta-alanine is often found in pre-workout supplements, as it can improve exercise performance and help push through fatigue during your workouts. It is also relatively safe, with few side effects reported. However, it can cause a tingling sensation on the skin, which is often referred to as “paresthesia.” Personally, I find it pretty annoying, but it is harmless and goes away with time.

N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine 750 mg – N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, also known as NAT, is a derivative of the amino acid tyrosine. It is a more bioavailable form of tyrosine, which means the body more easily absorbs it. NAT is commonly used as a cognitive enhancer and mood booster. It has also been shown to improve exercise performance, which is why it is a popular ingredient in pre-workout supplements and why it made this list.

NAT works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are responsible for regulating mood, focus, and motivation. N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine has been shown to improve cognitive function in both healthy adults and those with cognitive impairment. It has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress.

NAT is generally well-tolerated and safe for most people. The most common side effect is gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea or diarrhea. NAT can also cause headaches, dizziness, and anxiety in some people. If you experience any of these side effects, discontinue use and consult your doctor.

 

There are more ingredients in THE Pre-Workout but those are the main ones that have the most effect.

Overall I would say these ingredients are pretty solid. It has all of the usual pre-workout ingredients plus creatine which I love, along with some other solid choices. They didn’t skimp on the dosing either, which is always good.

MyProtein suggests you mix 1 scoop of this pre-workout with 8-16 oz of water (depending on how strong you want the taste) in a shaker bottle or blender about 30-45 minutes before your workout.

 

Price on MyProtein THE Pre-Workout

Pricewise THE Pre-Workout is about average. The price will vary depending on where you buy, but as I am writing this article it is listed at a sale price of $31.99. It said the regular price was 41.99, but I am not sure if they ever actually charge anyone that price or if they wanted you to think you are getting a good deal.

Then they have a coupon code 25summer that they advertised on their website, which knocked 25% off the price, bringing it down to $23.99, which is an excellent price.

Shipping is extra unless you spend over $50.

 

Side Effects with THE Pre-Workout

As with all supplements, there are some potential side effects. Chief among these will be symptoms related to the consumption of caffeine.

This will include the jitters, anxiety, increased heart rate, and blood pressure. If you are sensitive to caffeine, I recommend starting with half a scoop to asses your tolerance.

The Beta Alanine could also cause the skin to tingle and give you a red face for 10 minutes or so, I can’t stand it, but most people don’t mind.

Other than that, there are no other notable side effects.

 

Will THE Pre-Workout by MyProtein Work For You?

As with any pre-workout or supplement, your results will vary.

If you are looking for a pre-workout to give you an edge in the gym, help you push through those last few reps, and boost your energy levels, then I think THE Pre-Workout is worth trying. It has a solid list of ingredients, most of which are dosed well.

Caffeine-sensitive people may want to start with half a scoop as the 150 mg per scoop may be too much for you, but other than that, I think it is a pre-workout a try.

The big negative is the use of artificial sweeteners. If you can overlook that, then this is undoubtedly a pre-workout worth considering.
